How does the Orientation Filter work?

With an increasing number of formats and devices to publish content on Instagram, the Orientation Filter was created for you to find the media with the right orientation for your needs: LANDSCAPE, PORTRAIT, and/or SQUARE.

Aspect ratio and Orientation

In photography, aspect ratio represents the relationship between the width and the height of an image. When the aspect ratio is expressed in two numbers separated by a colon, the first number typically refers to the horizontal side of the image, whereas the second number refers to the vertical side.

We use those numbers to determine the orientation of a media in the User-Generated Content Solution:

  • If the image width is bigger than the height, then the orientation is LANDSCAPE. The most common aspect ratios in landscape are 4:3 or 3:2.

  • If the image height is bigger than the width, then the orientation is PORTRAIT. Instagram Stories are one of the most popular content with this orientation, with an aspect ratio of 9:16, best suited for mobile devices.

  • If the image width is the same as the height, it means the image is SQUARE, perfect for the Instagram feed. And although the app supports rectangular format too, your first impression still comes from the main grid which still depends on the square aspect ratio.

It is important to note that the aspect ratio does not represent the physical size of an image or its dimensions in pixels. The Orientation filter works as a guide but, if the image is big enough, you can crop it to the aspect ratio perfect for your activation channels using our in-platform Media Editor.
