Best Practices for collecting content from hashtags
Updated over a year ago

Within the Collections section, you can now create Instagram collectors using only a hashtag (without an explicit mention or tap tag referencing your brand). This means you'll gather all content that includes the specified hashtag, including both images and videos.

Collecting from hashtags can help increase the amount of content available for your brand, but may also increase the amount of spam content. To keep your content relevant, keep in mind the following best practices while determining which hashtags you'll be collecting content from:

Do's

  • Take time researching.

  • Create unique, memorable and appealing hashtags.

  • Create simple and short hashtags. Make sure they are easy to spell and use capital letters on each word.

  • Keep your hashtag consistent with your brand image. If you want to create an evergreen hashtag, make it a part of your brand DNA and promote it whenever possible.

  • Create hashtags for specific campaigns, like contests, product launches, etc. We recommend to include the word “contest” in the actual hashtag (e.g., #jcrewcontest).

Don’ts

  • Use too many hashtags.

  • Use generic hashtags like #bestgiftever or #loveit, which will cause a high volume of spam.

  • Use ambiguous hashtags.

  • Use hashtags that have different meanings in other languages.

Collecting from Mentions and Tags

Mentions and tags are still the primary collectors. We recommend that you combine your @mention with a #hashtag, as include/exclude rules, to convey a certain tone, differentiate your campaigns, and gain a holistic understanding of social engagement.

Why mentions? A mention is a direct call out to your brand, on the post description or comment section. It is a precise and secure indicator to identify a brand/consumer dialogue.

Note: if content collected using solely hashtags, we are unable to obtain the Instagram username. This is a known limitation and the username will appear as "@private_instagram_user"
